House of Batukeshwar Dutt

On 18 November 1910, Batukeshwar Dutt was born in the small village of Onari (often spelled “Oari”), in the Khandaghosh block of Purba Bardhaman district, West Bengal.

Onari sits as part of the richer agrarian plain of Purba Bardhaman and is steeped in the history of Bengal’s revolutionary movement. While Batukeshwar Dutt is most famous for his role in the 1929 bombing of the Central Legislative Assembly alongside Bhagat Singh, his roots lie here in the rural heartland.

Today, visitors to Onari will find the ancestral home of the Dutt family (though in need of restoration), along with small local commemorative plaques and the annual remembrances held by residents of Khandaghosh. The quiet fields and village lanes present a striking contrast to the political storm that Dutt helped stir in Delhi decades earlier.

How to visit: Travel by train or bus to Bardhaman or Khandaghosh, then take local transport to Onari. The exact coordinates are 23.19587 N, 87.73331 E.

A visit to Onari offers not just a pilgrimage to a freedom fighter’s birthplace but a moment to reflect on how modest villages produced major figures in the fight for India’s independence.

Read More
