নীরেন্দ্রনাথ চক্রবর্তীর এই কবিতাটি আধুনিক বাংলা কবিতার এক অমর সৃষ্টি। এখানে “অমলকান্তি” নামের এক সাধারণ, দরিদ্র, স্বপ্নদ্রষ্টা যুবকের প্রতীকী চিত্র আঁকা হয়েছে।
অমলকান্তি রোদ্দুর হতে চেয়েছিল - অর্থাৎ সে সমাজে আলো, জ্ঞান ও উষ্ণতার প্রতীক হতে চেয়েছিল। কিন্তু জীবনের বাস্তবতা তাকে তা হতে দেয়নি। তবুও সে তার আদর্শ, স্বপ্ন, ও মানবিকতা ধরে রেখেছে।
কবিতায় অন্যরা বাস্তব জীবনের নানা কাজে ব্যস্ত হয়ে পড়েছে - চাকরি, ব্যবসা, অর্থ উপার্জন ইত্যাদিতে কিন্তু কেউই রোদ্দুর হতে পারেনি। তারা হয়তো সফল, কিন্তু অন্তর থেকে আলোকিত নয়।
অমলকান্তি সেই মানুষদের প্রতীক, যারা দারিদ্র্য সত্ত্বেও স্বপ্ন দেখে, ভালো কিছু চায়, মানবিকতা ধরে রাখে।
অমলকান্তি আমার বন্ধু,
ইস্কুলে আমরা একসঙ্গে পড়তাম।
রোজ দেরি করে ক্লাসে আসতো, পড়া পারত না,
শব্দরূপ জিজ্ঞেস করলে
এমন অবাক হয়ে জানলার দিকে তাকিয়ে থাকতো যে,
