Historically, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was a lifelong Congress leader, so his political roots were firmly in Congress.
However, his strong emphasis on nationalism, national security, cultural identity and a powerful central government has significant similarities with several of BJP's present-day positions.
He also strongly supported secular governance, constitutional values and minority protection. If we judge by his historical political affiliation, Congress is the clear answer. If we judge by selected policy similarities, some of his views overlap with BJP.
Great leaders take a stand on issues, not just party lines. Patel was a leader of conviction, not a follower of political convenience.
